Visit Exploring Mont Saint Michel from our holiday cottages in Normandy

From our holiday cottages and guest rooms in Brittany, you can reach Mont Saint-Michel in around 40 minutes, enjoy peaceful accommodation between Combourg, Saint-Malo and Cancale, and easily plan a day out exploring the medieval village, the abbey and the bay.

A monument where sky, sea and history meet

Mont Saint-Michel stands at the heart of a vast bay, famous for having some of the highest tides in Europe and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rocky islet, connected to the mainland by a causeway, offers a silhouette that is instantly recognisable, with its medieval village, ramparts and abbey perched at the summit.

Regarded as one of France’s most visited monuments, Mont Saint-Michel attracts heritage enthusiasts, families and travellers seeking stunning scenery alike. Situated between Normandy and Brittany, it is an ideal base from which to organise a holiday combining cultural discoveries, seaside walks and trips into the countryside.

To help you plan your visit, here are some of the things you can do at Mont Saint-Michel:

  • Stroll through the medieval alleyways and along the ramparts to enjoy the views of the bay.
  • Visit the’abbey, a true masterpiece of monastic architecture.
  • Watch the spectacle of tides and the play of light on the water and the sand.
  • Discover the history of the site through tours, museums or guided boat trips around the bay.

Plan a day trip to Mont Saint-Michel

Half a day is enough to explore the village and the ramparts, but we recommend setting aside a full day so you can take your time discovering the abbey and the various viewpoints overlooking the bay. In the morning, arriving early at the site usually means quieter streets, particularly in high season.

You reach the Mont via a large car park on the mainland, then by shuttle bus or on foot along the panoramic footbridge. Once there, you can walk along the Grande Rue or take some of the less well-known stairways to gradually make your way to the abbey and the various viewing points.

To organise your day, you could, for example:

  • Arrive early in the morning to enjoy a quieter village.
  • Walk gradually up towards the abbey, stopping to rest on the ramparts.
  • Visit the abbey in the middle of the day, allowing between 1 and 2 hours.
  • Head back down through the side streets to enjoy different views of the bay.

The spectacle of the tides and the bay

The bay of Mont Saint-Michel is a landscape in constant flux, shaped by spectacular tides that can reach a height of up to fifteen metres at their highest. When the tidal range exceeds 110, Mont Saint-Michel becomes an island again for a few hours, surrounded by water, offering a particularly impressive sight to behold from the ramparts.

As the day goes on, you’ll see the landscape change: expanses of sand, the water ebbing and flowing, and shades of grey, blue and gold depending on the light. For a more in-depth exploration, guided tours of the bay are available with accredited guides, who safely lead walkers across the sand and through the channels.

Set off from Romantic Brittany to explore the Mont

Staying in Combourg, in the heart of Romantic Brittany, allows you to explore Mont Saint-Michel during the day whilst enjoying a quieter setting at night. From La Breizhidence, you can reach Mont Saint-Michel in around 40 minutes by car, via quiet country roads.

Your base in Combourg also puts you within easy reach of many other attractions: the ramparts of Saint-Malo, the oysters from Cancale, the panoramic views of the Mount Dol or the medieval town of Dinan, all of which can be reached in around 30 minutes from the estate. This central location makes it easy to plan a holiday where each day is spent exploring a different landscape.

Guest rooms and life on the estate

Our bed and breakfast round off this range with a variety of atmospheres: a family suite, a room under the eaves, and a room overlooking the garden, all with a bright and welcoming feel. Each room features its own en-suite bathroom, a comfortable bed and tasteful décor.

In our daily lives, we cherish the simple moments: breakfast made with local produce and homemade dishes, walks in the edible forest, chatting around a log fire or playing traditional Breton games in the garden. The estate’s animals contribute to this friendly atmosphere, whilst respecting everyone’s personal space.

When you stay in our holiday rentals to explore Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll enjoy:

  • From an environment calm, away from the crowds at the major tourist attractions.
  • From a central access towards Mont Saint-Michel, Saint-Malo, Cancale, Dol-de-Bretagne and Dinan.
  • Accommodation carefully renovated, which prioritise comfort, natural light and high-quality materials.
  • From a vibrant estate where the nature and the user-friendliness play a central role.

Practical tips for your visit

Visitor numbers at Mont Saint-Michel vary greatly depending on the season, the day and the time of day. In high season, it is advisable to visit early in the morning or late in the day, when the narrow streets are quieter and the light is often softer. In autumn and winter, the atmosphere is generally more peaceful, with fewer visitors, making it easier to explore the narrow streets, ramparts and abbey.

The village can be visited freely and at no cost all year round, as can the ramparts, whilst entry to the abbey requires a separate ticket. The shuttle buses connecting the car park at the foot of the Mont are free, making it easy to organise your return journey depending on the weather and the pace of your day.

To ensure your trip goes smoothly, please remember to:

  • Check the opening hours the abbey’s opening hours and any exceptional closing days.
  • View the tide table to find out whether the mountain will be surrounded by water during your visit.
  • Give priority to comfortable shoes, suitable for stairs and cobbled streets.
  • Make sure you pack clothes suitable for windy conditions and temperature fluctuations around the bay.
